About Final Fantasy XVI Square Enix’s forthcoming action role-playing game, Final Fantasy XVI, marks the sixteenth primary installment in the Final Fantasy series. Set for release on June 22, 2023, the game will initially be exclusive to PlayStation 5. The gameplay will offer segmented open environments, a combat system incorporating melee and magic-based attacks, and classic series features such as Chocobos and summoned monsters or Eikons, which can be both battled and used for channelling power in combat.
Final Fantasy XVI unfolds in the fictional world of Valisthea, a land divided among six nations who derive power from magical Crystals and Dominants, humans serving as hosts for each nation’s Eikon. As a malady known as the Blight begins to plague the land, tensions among nations rise. The protagonist, Clive Rosfield, embarks on a revenge mission after witnessing the devastation of his kingdom, hunting the dark Eikon Ifrit.
Concept development for the game commenced in 2015, involving a team comprising producer Naoki Yoshida, main director Hiroshi Takai, artists Hiroshi Minagawa and Kazuya Takahashi, creative director and lead writer Kazutoyo Maehiro, composer Masayoshi Soken, and battle designer Ryota Suzuki, a Capcom veteran. The game aims to offer a dark fantasy storyline that resonates widely and rejuvenates the series. However, its production and promotion were affected by events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Despite some critiques regarding its RPG elements, framerate issues, and representation, the game has generally received praise for its narrative, characters, music, and combat system.
