The much-anticipated season seven trailer for Rick and Morty has been unveiled by Adult Swim, and it introduces fresh voices for the show’s lead characters.
The trailer for the upcoming season presents the new voice actors stepping in for co-creator Justin Roiland, who left the show following allegations of misconduct.
In a unique decision, Adult Swim is withholding the identities of the new voice actors for both Rick and Morty until the season’s debut. Sources at Adult Swim said they wanted “preserve the viewing experience for fans.”
The award-winning sci-fi comedy is set to return on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 11 p.m., with a lineup of 10 episodes, consistent with its recent seasons.
Roiland’s departure from the globally acclaimed show came after he faced felony domestic abuse charges in Orange County, California, earlier this year. This was soon followed by allegations of sending inappropriate messages to a fan, past controversial interview remarks, and claims of unprofessional behavior at the workplace. However, the charges against him were dropped in March.
In the wake of Roiland’s exit, Adult Swim has been on the hunt for voice actors who could closely match the original voices of the main characters. The network has reassured fans that Rick and Morty’s personalities will stay true to their essence. In related news, Dan Stevens has been chosen as the lead for another Roiland project, Hulu’s Solar Opposites.
The official synopsis for the seventh season hints at the voice changes: “Rick and Morty are back and sounding more like themselves than ever! It’s season seven, and the possibilities are endless: what’s up with Jerry? EVIL Summer?! And will they ever go back to the high school?! Maybe not! But let’s find out! There’s probably less piss than last season. Rick and Morty, 100 years! Or at least until season 10!”
Highlighting the show’s success, Adult Swim mentioned that Rick and Morty held the top spot in cable comedy during its third, fourth, fifth, and sixth seasons. In 2022, the series attracted over 19 million linear broadcast viewers and continues to be a favorite on the streaming platform, Max. With two Emmys under its belt for the best animated program, Rick and Morty is in the running for a third.
